Hello boys and girls!
We are well into our reading of The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe, by C.S. Lewis, and we have come to know several of these characters very well. We are now going to begin a character study unit. I am going to break you into groups, and each group will be assigned a different character to study. Then, as a group, you are going to create your very own puppet show video all about your character!
Here are some questions to think about as we begin this unit:
- What are some of the character’s personality traits? (I’m looking for adjectives!)
- What events in the book show these traits? What does the character DO and SAY to show this? (Supporting examples!)
- WHY do you think the character behaves in this way? (What other events in this story may have caused him/her to be a certain way?)
- If you were writing the book, what other things would you have the character do and say to show these traits – OR to explain WHY he/she behaves in this way?
Together in class over the next two weeks, we will be working together to create videos about your characters – step by step. We will pre-write with character maps, write scripts for our scene using the writing process, make puppets and backdrops, record the videos, and offer feedback to our classmates.
Here is what I expect from each group at the end of the unit:
1) A completed web chart about your character using the ReadWriteThink Webbing Tool.
2) A completed script of your puppet show scene, with all drafts.
3) A video of your puppet show, which I will post on my blog.
4) A comment from each member of your group offering feedback to other groups’ videos.
The videos will be posted on our class blog, and the backdrops and puppets will be displayed in our classroom when we are all finished.
Here is the rubric that will determine your grade:
Don’t be overwhelmed – we will be doing all of this together, and I will give you plenty of time during class to complete your group projects.
But before we start – click here for an assignment to start off our unit. It includes a video that may give you some ideas for your own video, so be sure to watch it!
Good luck, class. ☺
